QR Codes vs NFC Tags: Which Should You Use?
They solve the same problem — getting someone from a physical object to a digital destination — with completely different economics. The right answer usually comes down to how many units you are producing.
QR codes and NFC tags do the same job: they take someone from something physical to something digital. The comparison gets muddled because people argue about which is more modern, which is not a useful axis. The useful axes are cost, range, and how many of them you need.
What each one actually is
A QR code is a printed pattern. It costs whatever the ink costs, which at scale is nothing. Any phone camera can read one, from across a room, and you can put it on anything you can print on — including a screen, a projection or a television.
An NFC tag is a physical chip and antenna, usually in a sticker or embedded in an object. The phone has to come within a few centimetres, at which point it powers the chip through the antenna and reads the data. There is no battery; the tag is inert until a phone is close enough.
Both can be dynamic in the same sense: store a short redirect link and change where it goes later. Neither has an advantage there — the ability to repoint depends on encoding a link you control, not on the medium. Static vs dynamic applies equally to both.
Cost is usually the deciding factor
This is where the two genuinely diverge, and at volume it is not close.

A QR code on 50,000 flyers costs the same as one on a single flyer. Fifty thousand NFC tags is a real line item, plus the labour of encoding and applying them. That single fact decides most campaigns.
It flips for small numbers of high-value items. Twenty NFC tags in a showroom, or one embedded in a product worth hundreds, is a rounding error against the thing it is attached to.
Range changes what the thing is for
NFC works at roughly four centimetres. That is not a limitation to design around, it is the defining characteristic. It means:
- The person must be able to touch the object. A window display, a billboard, a poster behind a counter or anything across a room is impossible.
- The interaction is deliberate and unambiguous — there is no aiming, no framing, no wondering whether it worked.
- The tag can be invisible, embedded inside a product, under a table surface or behind a label, which some brands prefer aesthetically.
A QR code works at whatever distance you print it big enough for — the 10:1 rule covers the arithmetic. That makes it the only option for anything out of reach, and the better option for anything a crowd needs to use at once.
Device support
QR scanning is universal in practice. Every phone with a camera can do it, and both iOS and Android read codes from the built-in camera app with nothing installed.
NFC is very widely supported but not universal. iPhones from the XS generation onward read tags in the background without an app; some older models need an app or Control Centre. Most Android phones of the last decade include NFC, but budget handsets sometimes omit it, and it can be switched off in settings.
So NFC support is good enough for most Western consumer audiences and noticeably patchier in markets where budget devices dominate. If you cannot make assumptions about your audience's handsets, QR is the safer default.
Durability and environment
Each fails in different conditions, which is worth knowing before committing:

The metal point catches people out regularly. A standard NFC tag stuck to a metal surface will usually not read at all — you need tags manufactured with a ferrite layer for that, which cost more.
When QR is the right choice
- Anything printed at volume — flyers, packaging, magazine inserts, direct mail.
- Anything out of reach — windows, billboards, banners, signage behind counters.
- Anything a crowd uses at once — event posters, transport, venues.
- Anything that also appears on a screen — slides, TV, video, social posts. You cannot tap a television.
- Audiences with unpredictable handsets.
- Anything where the budget is the print budget.
When NFC is worth the money
- Small numbers of high-value items — showroom pieces, premium packaging, limited editions.
- Where the tap itself is the experience — a museum exhibit, a product you want to feel interactive, a loyalty card.
- Where a visible code would spoil the design and the tag can be hidden inside the object.
- Repeated use by the same people — staff check-ins, access, asset tracking. A tap is faster than a scan when you do it forty times a day.
- Dark or dirty environments where a camera would struggle.
- Anti-counterfeiting, where a chip is harder to duplicate than a printed pattern.
Using both is often the right answer
They are not mutually exclusive, and on premium items the usual pattern is a hidden NFC tag for the people who know to tap, plus a small printed QR code for everyone else. Point both at the same destination and you cover the whole audience.
If you do this, use separate tracking links for each so you can see which is actually being used. In most consumer contexts the QR code carries the large majority of the traffic, which is useful to know before spending on tags for the next production run.
How to choose
- How many units? Thousands, and the cost per tag decides it — use QR.
- Can the person touch it? If not, QR is the only option.
- Is it also going on a screen? Then you need a QR code regardless.
- Is the item valuable enough to justify a pound of hardware? If yes, NFC becomes reasonable.
- Do you know your audience's phones? If not, QR is safer.
For most printed marketing the answer is a QR code, and the reason is economics rather than technology. NFC is genuinely better at what it is for — it is just for a narrower set of things than the marketing around it suggests.
